Bruneau Sand Dunes has been on my “we should probably take the kids there again someday” list for years… so we finally did it.
I hadn’t been back since I was in 5th or 6th grade, and honestly… it was pretty much how I remembered it.
Not something we’re going to do every weekend… but one of those places that’s absolutely worth mixing in every couple of years just to get the kids out of the house and do something different.
If you’ve never been, Bruneau Sand Dunes State Park is one of the most unique outdoor destinations in Idaho.
It’s home to the tallest single-structured sand dune in North America, reaching about 470 feet tall. On top of that, you’ve got lakes, hiking trails, camping, and even an observatory for stargazing.
It’s about 1.5 hours from South Nampa and costs around $7 to get in, which makes it a super easy day trip if you’re living anywhere in the Treasure Valley.

What the Experience Is Actually Like
Here’s the part I didn’t fully remember…
This place is legit.
The dunes are bigger than you expect, and the environment is way more intense than a normal park.
The sand gets hot. The wind picks up. And yes… you will be eating sand at some point.
But that’s also what makes it fun.
Kids can run, climb, roll down hills, and just burn energy in a way that’s hard to replicate anywhere else.

There’s no structure, no schedule, just wide open space.
And honestly, that’s a big part of the appeal.
Tips Before You Go
If you’re planning a trip out to Bruneau Sand Dunes, here are a few things that will make a huge difference:
- Go on a cooler day — the sand gets extremely hot
- Bring sunglasses — the wind will have you eating sand
- Sunscreen and bug spray are a must
- Wear sandals — shoes fill up with sand fast
- Bring water — there’s very little shade
These small things will completely change your experience.

Why It’s One of the Best Photo Spots in Idaho
This is something I forgot how good this place is for…
Photos.
The lighting, the textures, and the wide open space make it completely different from anything else in Idaho.
My oldest actually did a photo shoot with the amazing Mike Reid out here a couple years ago, and it turned out unreal.

If you’re into photography, content creation, or just want something different for family pictures… this place hits.
